On Davidson
Published in Paperback by Wadsworth Publishing (07 June, 2002)
Average review score:

How did Wheeler do it?By far the best introduction to Davidson's philosophy. It is amazing that Wheeler could pack, in less than 100 pages, both a description and a justification of so much of Davidson's life's work.
One of the things which makes Davidson's work hard to understand is that many of his theses are so bizzare and counterintuative. Here is where Wheeler's book shines--instead of just enumerating bizzare thesis after bizzare thesis, he makes a habit of stating a bizzare thesis and then ALSO stating a very cogent reason why we should believe it. These reasons are so carefully crafted and articulated that it really aids in understanding.

One Dark Night
Published in Hardcover by Harcourt Children's Books (01 April, 2003)
Average review score:

This book is a definite keeper!Mouse and Mole are two teensy-tiny creatures in the woods. There's a BIG GIANT hungry bear there too. "Then, one dark night. . ." Mouse and Mole venture out and travel through the woods. Meanwhile the bear is getting hungrier and hungrier. Of course, they meet. . .and, the ending will surprise you! You will fall in love with the characters because the illustrations are so well done. But the best part of all for me, as a teacher, is the rhythm and rhyme of this story. Kids love to hear good verse and Lisa Wheeler has it!

Ovid VI: Tristia Ex Ponto
Published in Hardcover by Harvard Univ Pr (December, 1968)
Average review score:

Forgotten PoetryThe top writer in one of the most powerful empires the world has ever known was mysteriously banished from the capital city by the mighty emperor Augustus himself for scandalous reasons ordered to be kept secret by Augustus and still secret to this day. This wonderful book contains the voice of this great exiled poet as he laments and expresses his personal feelings on his fate, never revealing the "secret", but offering us tantalizing clues as if he longs for someone someday to discover the forbidden truth of the Emperor's wrath. These two works, "Tristia," and "Letters from the Black Sea," have been largely ignored through the ages, left standing in the shadows of the famous "Metamorphoses" and Ovid's love poems. For those who wish to read the personal poetry, the "diary," of an exiled poet, this book is an absolute treasure. After reading this book, the reader can not help but feel as if he or she has now come to know Ovid on a friendly, intimate level. This book is a must for the serious lover of great literature.

Packing for the Big Trip: Life Benefits from Death Awareness
Published in Paperback by Pathfinder Publishing of California (May, 1997)
Average review score:

Just what I needed. This book was referred to me by a friend following the loss of my mother, and I have recommended it to several other friends since reading it. While I didn't agree with 100% of the book's contents, I could accept about 99%--and it spoke to me in a way that the typical sappy support-type books can't even approach. While it's certainly written for people of all faiths--even atheists or agnostics--Christians who enjoy unique theological viewpoints will benefit especially. If your heart needs more than sympathy to deal with the pain of death, this book offers a great deal of wisdom.

Paiute
Published in Paperback by Univ of Nevada Pr (September, 1986)
Average review score:

Historical fiction at its finestCharacter, integrity, friendship, loyalty, morality, ethics, romance, personal responsibility and sacrifice -- you name it, this book promotes the highest standards in all of these areas. The author explains two very important historical events occurring in 1859-1860 in western Nevada (Utah territory at the time), the Virginia City gold and silver rush, and the Pyramid Lake war involving miners and settlers and the various tribes and bands of Paiute Indians. He intertwines a beautiful story of personal tragedy, hardship, romance and triumph with historical events to paint an accurate picture of the lives and times of the men and women during that era. This is a book that can be read to the whole family to spark wholesome conversation and discussion of values by which we should strive to live, especially those values respecting the wisdom, intellect and dignity of all races and cultures.

It inspires one to think about the meanings of "power" and how a group process can empower an individual as part of a group. Gives good, practical advice on dealing with conflict within a group. A great book for beginning non-profit collective, feminist group, student activist organization, etc.

The Penguin Book of Garden Writing
Published in Paperback by Penguin Uk (February, 2000)
Average review score:

SOMETHING DIFFERENTI have MANY other garden writing anthologies, but this is one with wonderful excerpts I have not seen before. Some familiar material, but not much. No pretty pictures, but the text more than makes up for it. The choices for this book are very enjoyable and inspiring for hands-on or armchair gardeners alike. Highly Recommended.
